The Canon Elan 7 is the practical modern film body for anyone still using EF lenses. It does not have the romance of a fully mechanical SLR, but it is somewhat fast, familiar, and easy to use. The autofocus is decent for a 35mm film camera, the metering is reliable, and the EOS controls make it feel immediately natural if you already shoot Canon digital.

Prices have climbed in recent years. I bought mine for about $60 USD in 2020; now it is often closer to $300 USD on the used market. That changes the value equation a bit, but it still makes sense if you want a film body that can work alongside a digital Canon kit.

This is the camera I bring on assignment when I want to shoot both digital and film. I can use the EF 100-400mm I already rely on with my RF bodies, or keep the setup light with the EF 40mm f/2.8 pancake. My only real issue is focus inconsistency. I am not sure whether it is my copy or the camera itself, but I sometimes miss focus even when the red AF confirmation light appears.

The Good:

• EF autofocus lens compatibility makes it easy to use excellent modern Canon glass.

• 7-point AF and AI Servo make moving subjects much easier than on manual-focus bodies.

• Familiar EOS ergonomics make it simple if you already know Canon digital cameras.

• Quiet film advance and rewind make it useful for documentary and event work.

• Lightweight and capable enough to be a daily-use 35mm film body.

The Bad:

• Not weather sealed, even if mine has survived several salty coastal trips.

• Plastic-era construction feels less durable than older metal manual SLRs.

• If the electronics fail, it might be hard to repair it.

• Autofocus can be hit or miss, literally.

• Get it if you want a practical autofocus film body and already own Canon EF lenses.

• Get it if you want reliable metering and EOS ergonomics for less than an EOS-1V or EOS 3.

• Get it for events, travel, documentary work, and mixed digital/film assignments.

• Pass if you want a fully mechanical film camera experience.

• Pass if you need a rugged body for sports, wildlife, or tough weather.
