FAMILIAR PLACES

SOUTH OF FRANCE

GOLDEN ISLANDS

The series Familiar Places is an open letter of apology to all the places we often take for granted. Through collections of films, photos and short stories, I intend to share tales of these familiar yet unique places that I am lucky to call home.

And finally, I remember Her. She is said to be one of four daughters cherished by an ancient king. She was known for her two faces. Like any formidable woman, she was fierce, untamed and beautiful. The relentless winds carved her southern lines with sharp black cliffs that plunged into the depths where ferocious waves broke against her sides.

But she was also calm, soothing and kind. Her curved northern lines were filled with sandy beaches, delicately licked by crystal waters. She always sang with the cicadas, luring sailors from the Seven Seas. It is said that a famous loving pirate gifted her with his entire treasure that she kept hidden ever since.

She was so mesmerizing that an Ancient Serpent fell for her and jealously fought prying sailors with its fire breath. The Leviathan was named L'Alycastre and made its lair in a deep and dark cave pierced in the bluffs of a windy beach. Those who dared to venture into the cove would hear the serpent's fainted roar blended with the waves.

She wore the most exquisite perfume, the sourness of citrus, the exotic scent of eucalyptus and the salted brine. From the first time I saw Her, I knew. Like many men and women before me, I had fallen for Her. She was named Porquerolles.

Along with her sisters, The Greeks named them Stoechades. Today they are known as the Golden Islands.

  • Wish You The Best by Josh Oliver

    • Shot on Panasonic GH5 — 1080p 60fps 10bits — Cine-D.

    • Shot on iPhone X with Filmic Pro — 4k 24p 8bits — Filmic Log.

    • Shutter speed was under control with ND Filter for GH5 but not the iPhone X, as I didn't have an adapter.

    • Edited in Premiere Pro (iPhone footage downsized from 4K to 1080p timeline).

    • Ratio set to 2:39.1 (Post-production crop).

    • Graded with Film Convert Nitrate.

    • Sound Design & Audio Mix with Audition.

  • The Familiar Places series was the second personal project I shot with a Panasonic camera. I borrowed GH5 with the Lumix Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 as well as a Panasonic zoom lens (I believe the 35-100mm f/2.8). I never was found of 4.3 sensors; however, the 10bits feature seemed promising. I also used my iPhone X with the Filmic Pro app and their log profile.

The lack of an ND Filter for the iPhone X turned out to be more difficult than expected. During the post-production, I found that many shots were unusable between the overexposure and the wrong white balance.
The feature to lock exposure and white balance didn't correctly work with Filmic Pro installed on my iPhone X.
The wrong white balance was extremely unforgiving while shooting on the iPhone when I tried to match it with another camera.
The overwhelming amounts of settings, modes, and profiles available on the GH5 were quite confusing since I didn't use this camera often.
All my shots in 60fps that came from the Gh5 looked choppy in Premiere. The speed ramp was not working correctly. I had to use the Interpret footage feature instead, and it messed with my rough cut. Not sure if the issue came from the GH5 files or with Premiere. Although, I tend to believe Premiere was at fault since I tried the footage in Final Cut Pro X and didn't notice any issues.
