ANNECY | THONES | LA CLUSAZ

From a very young age, I travelled to the French Alps. I descended my first slopes on the bluffs of Merdassier Peak, caught my first fish in a blue pond, and learnt the first sailing ropes and Annecy's emerald waters. Finally, I shot some of my first photographs there, a summer everlasting sun setting above Annecy's shores, taken from a Nokia 6280.

Now to come to think about it, a trip to the French Alps always begun through a road trip. We rode the train very rarely, and even more seldom did we fly above the mountains to reach the canals of the French Venice. I've always assimilated the French Alps to a road trip, and I'm sure of it now - it is from those endless hours cruising the A6 highway that caused my love for road trips. Even though at the time, it was more about the destination than the journey (a feeling that shifted when I learned to drive and later found myself exploring the infinite roads crossing the wild swaths of Canada.)

  • Dabilo by Tom Rosenthal

    • Shot on Panasonic GH5 — 1080p 60fps 10bits — Cine-D.

    • Shot on Dji Phantom 3 Pro — 4K 24fps & 1080p 60fps — Flat.

    • Shot on Mavic Pro — 4K 24p — D-Log.

    • Shot on iPhone X with Filmic Pro — 4k 24p 8bits — Filmic Log & Native Camera 4K 24p.

    • Shutter speed was under control with ND Filter for GH5 but not the iPhone X, as I didn't have an adapter.

    • Edited in Premiere Pro (footage downscaled from 4K to 1080p timeline).

    • Ratio set to 2:39.1 (Post-production crop).

    • Graded with Film Convert Nitrate.

    • Sound Design & Audio Mix with Audition.

    • The feature to lock exposure and white balance didn't correctly work with Filmic Pro installed on my iPhone X.

    • The wrong white balance was extremely unforgiving while shooting on the iPhone when I tried to match it with another camera.

    • The overwhelming amounts of settings, modes, and profiles available on the GH5 were quite confusing since I didn't use this camera often. I ended up with some 4K clips, and some 1080p randomly spread throughout the trip.

    • All my shots in 60fps that came from the Gh5 looked choppy in Premiere. The speed ramp was not working correctly. I had to use the Interpret footage feature instead, and it messed with my rough cut. Not sure if the issue came from the GH5 files or with Premiere. Although, I tend to believe Premiere was at fault since I tried the footage in Final Cut Pro X and didn't notice any issues.
