The Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.4 is the fast normal lens that makes a Minolta kit feel complete. It is faster and more expressive than the common 50mm f/1.7, but still practical enough to use as an everyday lens. I bought mine for cheap back in 2014, alongside the 135mm f/2.8, to build a more complete kit for my Minolta SRT-101.

What surprised me is how sharp it can be wide open, at least for a vintage lens, and how good it becomes around f/2.8. It keeps the characteristics I like in Rokkor lenses — the flares, the colour, the contrast, and that specific look — without becoming too precious or expensive.

Version matters a little with Minolta 50mm f/1.4 lenses, since size, filter thread, and optical formula changed over time. But honestly, if you find a clean copy at a good price, this is one of those lenses that is easy to recommend. It gives you a lot of the Rokkor character without needing to chase the rarer f/1.2.

The Good:

• f/1.4 gives low-light flexibility and shallow depth of field.

• 50mm is a core everyday film focal length.

• Classic Rokkor rendering with strong colour and contrast when stopped down.

• Surprisingly good wide open for a vintage lens.

• Very affordable compared with rarer Rokkor lenses.

• Better and more interesting than the common f/1.7 if you want more character.

The Bad:

• Older copies may need cleaning or service, like any legacy lens.

• If you already prefer the 58mm f/1.4, roles can overlap.

• Get it if you want a fast normal lens for Minolta film.

• Get it if you want character without going to f/1.2 prices.

• Pass if … Can’t find of a reason honestly, it’s so affordable that even if you don’t like it you won’t break the bank.
