The RODE VideoMicro II is my simple “always in the bag” camera mic. It will not replace a proper boom or wireless lav system, but it is a major upgrade over in-camera audio and requires almost no thought: plug it in, mount it, and record. It is great for scratch audio or when nothing else is available.
The Good:
Very small and lightweight.
No batteries or menus; simple plug-and-play workflow.
Better directionality and clarity than built-in camera microphones.
Good emergency or backup mic for a compact kit.
Comes with a dead kitten-style windshield for wind protection.
Crazy affordable.
The Bad:
On-camera position is rarely ideal for professional dialogue when the subject is more than two meters away.
Limited control: no gain, filters, or onboard options.

Get it if you want a tiny, reliable camera-top audio upgrade that will always be better than the camera’s built-in microphone — or as a backup mic.
Get it for BTS, travel, scratch audio, and smartphone rigs.
Get it if simplicity matters more than maximum sound quality.
Pass if you need clean interview/dialogue audio at a distance.
Pass if you already always use a proper boom, lav, or wireless kit.
