Shot on Canon C200

My second trip to the Sunshine Coast took place in the late summer of 2019. Hired to shoot a wedding at the Painted Boat Resort, we stayed for a few days.

My preceding trip to the Sunshine Coast had been an oxymoron to Sunshine as it rained for three days.

However, the weather forecast was much more optimistic this time.

Finally, this was my last time using the Canon C200 - which was my favourite camera at the time. However, I had used it quite a while in the past weeks and enjoyed working with this camera.

I shot mainly with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II. Both lenses were stabilized. It allowed me to shoot everything on a monopod - sometimes using the monopod as a makeshift Steadicam.

The pinnacle of this trip was my encounter with two humpback whales cruising by the shores of Smuggler Cove. A unique moment that made me want to come back again and again to the Sunshine Coast. Now that we can start thinking about travel again, let's see where the future takes us.

  • About The Weather by Tom Rosenthal

    • Canon EOS C200 at 3840x2160px - 60fps - Wide DR profile

    • Canon EOS 5D Mark IV at 1080p - 60fps - C-Log (Upscaled to 3840px with Topaz LLC).

    • EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS

    • EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II

    • EF Extender x1.4

    • Edited in Final Cut Pro X.
Ratio Set to 2:35.1 in post-production.

    • Evening shots denoised with NeatVideo V5.

    • Graded with Film convert Nitrate.

    • Sound Design & Audio Mix in Logic Pro X.

  • The combination of the IS lens and the monopod’s weight allowed me to mimic several Steadicam movements without excessive camera shakes. Combined with 60fps on a 24p timeline and the use of FCPX stabilization, it turned out quite well.
The histogram helped me keep my highlights with the help of the built-in variable ND filters. However, sometimes the dynamic range felt short while shooting internally in 8 bits. I wish I had used the C-Log instead of the Wide DR profile.
The electronic viewfinder is fantastic to compose and reduce the surrounding distraction.
I bet on the Autofocus of the camera and was not disappointed. I barely had to adjust it manually.
