SEA TO SKY

BRITISH COLUMBIA

CANON EOSR + DJI RSC2

After a year away spent in the Canadian Rockies, I came back to the Pacific Northwest Coast. As soon as possible, I drove to the Sea to Sky Highway and stopped at Porteau Cove Provincial Park.

I had undoubtedly missed the ocean—the scent of salted air and the itch of brine on the skin. Then I decided to search for that lookout above Squamish I had found a few years earlier. However, by the time I found the place, the sun had vanished behind the mountains. What was left was a pink hue across the sky and a crispy white frost overlaid on the ground.

    • Canon EOS R at 1080p 60fps - C-Log.

    • Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 DG OS HSM.

    • iPhone X at 4K 60fps with Moment Anamorphic Lens.

    • Gimbal DJi RSC-2 with Motor Focus and RavenEye.

    • Variable Neutral Density Filter.

    • Edited in Premiere Pro.

    • Ratio Set to 2:35.1 in post-production.

    • Sound Design & Audio Mix in Audition.

    • The Canon EOS R and Sigma Art 24-70 barely fits on the gimbal as the lens is much heavier than the body and the centre of gravity is quite odd. To correctly balance the gimbal, I had to push back the camera almost against the back arm of the gimbal - leaving just enough clearance to allow the use of the 360 mode (where the camera faces up)

    • Using a zoom lens, I suggest balancing the gimbal with the lens set in the middle of the zoom focal lens. This will allow you to pull back to the widest focal and also to push to telephoto. For example, I zoomed to 40mm on my Sigma Art 24-70. Once the gimbal was balanced, I could zoom from 24mm to 70mm without having unwanted shakes at 70mm.
