iPhone 13 PRO | 4K 24fps PRORES 422HQ

Although I received my iPhone 13 Pro on launch day, I decided to wait until I received the gear required to mount the Moment Anamorphic lens before fully testing the video features on this phone.

Once the SmallRig iPhone 13 Pro cage arrived, I mounted all the accessories and drove to the North Shores to capture the high wind and rolling waves of the Howe Sound. I needed more control than the default camera app offered. FilmicPro offered ProRes even before Apple released their software update, which was quite surprising.

Unfortunately, I found the FilmicPro app quite buggy in ProRes mode. The app often crashed, stopped recording and corrupted some files. It was only a few months since the ProRes feature became available, and I’m sure it will become more stable with the next releases.

When it comes to the file sizes, no bad surprises here, yes it takes a lot of space, but it was expected; in fact, that’s the whole idea of ProRes - a lightly compressed file for an easier editing workflow.

As expected, editing the file was relatively easy, especially with the latest MacBook Pro M1 Max and Final Cut Pro X. I edited on an SDR timeline, converting the colour from HLG to standard Rec 709 and then used Film Convert Nitrate to work on the colours.
