The SmallRig LP-E6P is the third-party battery Canon probably does not want you to know about. Why? Because it is fully compatible with recent Canon mirrorless bodies like the Canon R5C, Canon R6 Mark II, and Canon R6 Mark III, while still unlocking the power-hungry features these cameras need: pre-burst, higher codecs, and demanding video modes. It also costs about half the price of the genuine Canon battery.

I have tried other LP-style batteries that were supposedly compatible with the Canon R5C, only to put them in the camera and immediately get a warning that the battery was not supported. This SmallRig version is different. It works flawlessly in both my Canon R5C and Canon R6 Mark III.

So what is the catch? So far, not much. They seem to last about as long as the genuine Canon batteries, but time will tell if the cells age as well as Canon’s official packs.

The Good:

• Built-in USB-C charging is genuinely convenient.

• Higher rated capacity than many OEM-style LP-E6 packs.

• Fully decoded for recent Canon mirrorless cameras.

• Works properly in my Canon R5C and Canon R6 Mark III.

• Can charge from power banks, car chargers, or wall adapters.

• Affordable compared with Canon OEM batteries.

The Bad:

• Long-term cell health may not match Canon originals.

• Exact compatibility should still be checked per camera body.

• I would still test them before relying on them for critical paid work.

• Get it as a convenient travel and backup Canon battery.

• Get it if USB-C charging simplifies your workflow.

• Get it if you want to expand your battery count without OEM pricing.

• Get it if you shoot with a Canon R5C or R6 Mark III and want a cheaper battery that actually works.

• Pass if you only trust Canon OEM batteries.

• Pass if your camera has not been tested with it.
