Freewell

I just got these filters for the new drone, so this is still an initial impression. Freewell is quickly becoming my go-to filter brand, whether for drones or larger cameras. They make excellent filters at a reasonable price.

I chose this kit specifically because I knew I needed ND/CPL filters for coastal flying. Being able to cut reflections while controlling exposure is important. Of course, the polarization effect varies with the angle of the drone camera relative to the sun, but I found that keeping the gimbal more horizontal makes the effect quite useful in most cases. That is also one of the reasons I use vertical mode less.

These filters are also two ND strengths in one. The top section, used by the main camera, is one stop darker than the lower section to compensate for the different apertures between the Mavic 4 Pro cameras. It is a smart solution for a multi-camera drone system, especially if you want exposure control to stay more consistent across focal lengths.

The Good:

• Split ND design is tailored to the Mavic 4 Pro’s camera system.

• ND/PL combo improves exposure control and glare reduction at the same time.

• Useful for coastal, water, and bright daylight aerial work.

• Gimbal-safe design keeps the drone operating smoothly.

• Good value compared with buying several separate specialty filters.

The Bad:

• More specialized than a simple ND-only set.

• Polarization can create uneven skies or inconsistent results if used carelessly.

• Filter choice still takes time before each flight.

• Not as flexible as a true variable ND system.

• The case cannot fit the original clear filter from the drone but I know the case for the standard ND filter does. Why is what case compatible but not the other? No idea…

• Get it if you need combined ND and polarization for bright aerial work.

• Get it if you often fly near water, coastlines, snow, or reflective surfaces.

• Get it if you want a filter set designed around the Mavic 4 Pro’s multi-camera system.

• Pass if you prefer simple ND-only filters.

• Pass if you want the fastest filter workflow possible before each flight.

• Pass if you would rather use DJI’s electronic VND made specifically for the Mavic 4 Pro. It is not widely available, likely because of patent issues in the USA, but some people have managed to order it directly from China.
