The Canon EF-RF Adapter is one of the least exciting pieces of gear in the bag, but also one of the most important. It used to come included with the Canon EOS R around 2019/2020 to help photographers adapt their EF glass.

Funny enough, this particular adapter came from France. Back in 2020, there was a massive shortage, and even though my EOS R was supposed to come with one, the adapter was out of stock. When I got the EOS R, it sat on my desk for two weeks because I did not own any RF glass yet. The adapter was finally ready for pickup the day I was moving out of Calgary.

It stayed in the box, and I later sold my second copy. The first one now lives almost permanently on my EF 100-400mm. That is probably the best way to use it: attached to an EF lens you still rely on, so it feels less like an adapter and more like part of the lens.

The Good:

• Makes EF and EF-S lenses work cleanly on RF bodies.

• No optical elements, so image quality is not degraded by the adapter.

• Autofocus and stabilization support feel reliable with compatible Canon EF lenses.

• Small, simple, and easy to keep in the kit.

• Extends the life of an existing EF lens collection.

The Bad:

• Adds a little length between camera and lens.

• Easy to forget when switching between EF and RF lenses, which has happened to me a few times and it sucks.

• The basic version does not add a control ring or drop-in filter slot.

• Third-party EF lenses can vary more in compatibility than Canon EF glass.

• Get it if you own Canon EF lenses and are moving to, or already using, an RF camera body.

• Get it if you want the simplest, most reliable way to keep EF glass in your kit.

• Get it if you prefer a no-fuss adapter with no extra optics or controls.

• Pass if you specifically want the control-ring version or the drop-in filter adapter instead.

• Pass if you have fully moved to native RF lenses.
